“The story behind each classic car”

Did you notice the Cosmo on the Autosalon 2023 in Brussels? The first Mazda named Cosmo (1105 for export models) was (along with the NSU Ro80) one of the first production cars with a 2-rotor Wankel engine. A prototype was presented at the 1964 Tokyo Motor Show a month before the 1964 Summer Olympics, following the introduction of the NSU Spider at the Frankfurt Motor Show. 80 pre-production Cosmos models were produced for Mazda's test facility (20) and dealer tests (60) between 1965 and 1966. Full production began in May 1967 and lasted until 1972, although only one Cosmos per day hand built. The Bi-rotor rotary engine contained 491 cc per rotor chamber and produced 110-130 hp. This made the car 185-200 km/h fast. The Cosmo series 1 was produced 1967 to 1972. 10A: 343 (May 1967-July 1968) L10B: 1,176 (July 1968- September 1972

The Cosmo Sport is the first Mazda with a rotary engine. As early as 1968, two of these sports cars were sent to Belgium to take part in the infamous Marathon de la Route. It started in Liège for an 84-hour battle on one of the most demanding circuits in the world: the Nürburgring. After 80 hours the Mazdas were running in fourth and fifth positions, until Katayama flew off the track. The 'Belgian' car finished fourth and Mazda received the safety prize because Katayama emerged from the accident unscrathed thanks to the robustness of the car.
